Lynda's Images And Words 213 ~ Animals : Both Great Or Small ~

Images And Words 213 ~ Animals : Both Great Or Small ~

Welcome to Images And Words Week 213 And Our Theme is -
Animals: Both Great Or Small

The horse continues to amaze me.  At a roping, it stands in the chute all tense and ready to go, as the calf leaves (it gets a head start, 10 seconds added to their time if rider/horse leave too quick), the horse goes from a stand still to a full run.  When the riders ropes the calf the horse goes from a full run to a sliding stop to aid the rider to dismount the moving horse, run to the calf and tie it.  Fastest time wins.

Yesterday I attended a local roping.  A memorial roping to raise money for scholarships.  Grandsons and friends were entered.  Decided it was a perfect time to try out the new lens in an outdoor action packed activity.  We parked on the north side of the arena (so north wind would blow dust away from me), backed up to the fence and I sat up "shop" in the back of the pickup, sitting on the extra fuel tank/tool box, new lens on camera (80-400mm), tripod, and started experimenting. Started out with automatic setting but changed to the scene sports setting.  Kept it that way for the remainder of the even.  Photo is one of the Grandsons.  The other grandson was 3rd in the average.  Each person got 3 runs and then the top ropers came back for the short go.

To me it can't get much better than riding in the mountains with husband and friends.

Lynda's Images and Words Week 207 ~ Light

Images And Words Week 207 ~ Light ~

This is probably my favorite subject for my photography --- OK, maybe 2nd with horses being first.  So I combine the two.  Saturday I was invited to Heather's training barn to meet an editor for the Paint Horse Journal.  The reporter was doing a photo interview with Heather for another article (the first article done with Heather used my photos that I took especially for that article).  It was a neat experience to watch the two professionals: horse trainer and magazine editor work together.  I was also a bit jealous of the camera equipment the Paint Horse Association furnished Laura.  As soon as I got home I looked up the cost & specs of the Nikon D3 and the 70-200 Nikkor lens on B&H: $9095.95 without any taxes or accessories one might want.  I don't think I'll be putting this on my wants lists anytime soon.

The most exciting thing for me was that Laura gave me a quick lesson on using manual settings for indoor arenas when the light is not good.  It was a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy day.  This barn with it's sky lights can be a fun place to take photos and I've gotten some neat shots using nature's spot lights.  It was exciting to get action shots without blurring.  I know this one doesn't have the action but I loved how the light spot lighted the dust trail after Heather stopped the young horse.  Here's the photo from Saturday using manual settings for the first time with good results in a low light situation.

My first images & words entry on Multiply

From Milli, hostess for the week:

Basically what I want to see from everyone this week is one of your more unusual photos, a photo of maybe a subject that you would not normally set your sights upon, used as your I&W and then either write a quote for the photo or use one that fits the bill from elsewhere.
~~*~~

This hen might not have been wet but she sure was mad.  Very upset that I wanted to photograph her family of small chicks.  Even though we live in the country, we don't have chickens.  While visiting my folks I really aggravated this mother hen taking photographs of her family.

New to the group (still waiting for approval, only joined today) so I hope I am doing this correctly.
